Did you know it was Global Handwashing Day this month?

Whilst reading about this event I learned that a recent survey has shown that British families handwashing routines are somewhat less than adequate. It shows that nearly three quarters of UK families do not wash their hands before meals.

The Initial Washroom Hygiene survey of 2,000 UK households found that 73% of families do not wash their hands before sitting down to eat. This is despite the fact that strong evidence supports the hygiene benefits of handwashing prior to meals.

Initial also carried out a swabbing experiment to measure the level of bacteria on family members hands before breakfast and dinner. It was shown that bacteria fell by 83% after those surveyed had washed their hands.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, children’s hands were found to be the muckiest in any family. They are likely to be home to 46% more bacteria than adults. This further emphasises the importance of instilling a regular handwashing regime before meals for children from an early age.

As winter approaches and brings with it the flu season, it is more important than ever to maintain good hand hygiene. It is estimated that 80% of all infections are transmitted by hand.

By simply washing your hands you can significantly reduce the amount of bacteria present on them. It is vitally important at meal times when what our hands touch is put into our mouths.

So, go and wash your hands and tell your kids too!
